studio 101: beach house, edwards point, australia

studio-101-beach-house...

beach house, edwards point, australia by studio101 architects
all photos by trevor mein

‘beach house at edwards point’by australian studio101architects incorporates an extension and renovation
to an existing single storey holiday home. located within the significant wetlands of edwards point
and adjacent to swan bay on the bellarine peninsula, victoria, the design concept reflects the owner’s
requirements of a sustainable, sensitive and delicate fusion of form and materials that would also
nestle into the treed coastal environment.

the completed project grasps the opportunity to sustainably re-use, re-cycle, re-work and re-habitate
the existing holiday home, maintaining the sentimentality of the existing form and materials, whilst
providing a playful and exciting adaptation of the new programmatic requirements of a growing family.
the design concept involved re-working the ground floor planning, peeling back the existing roof
and sensitively grafting and floating a new timber clad upper level with infill glazing incorporated to
the north and south for a sense of lightness, views and transparency.

internally, a new central storage spine horizontally separates and delineates the living zone from
the bedrooms. the new timber lined wet area pod vertically links the upper and lower floors forming
a new mezzanine parents retreat while also creating a thermal chimney effect syphoning out the rising hot
air in summer.

tine de ruysser: wearable metal origami

tine-de-ruysser-wearab...

belgian designer tine de ruysser focused on the creation of wearable metal origami for her PhD at the royal college of art
in london. one of the products she developed for her project was this shoulder cape made from copper and polyester
combined in a geometric folding pattern. the unique geometry of the cape allows it to conform to the wearer’s body,
fitting like a fabric rather than a solid metal. the materials consist of small squares and triangular forms made from sheet
copper, connected together in a repeating pattern using the polyester. the shape of the metal gives the material its
malleability. de ruysser created a number of other objects for her project including skirts, bracelets and bags.

julien berthier: l’horloge d’une vie de travail

julien-berthier-lhorlo...

‘l’horloge d’une vie de travail 1’ by julien berthier, 2008

l’horloge d’une vie de travail is a project by artist julien berthier which consists of clocks which count the time
a person works rather than actual time. l’horloge d’une vie de travail 1 counts the hours of work accumulated before
retirement. the user can activate the clock in person or through their mobile phone. the concept aims to visualize
a person’s individual time as opposed to universal time. the second iteration updates the number of years worked to
40 years and one quarter to be in accordance with the french law which came into effect in 2009.

magic bulb LED flashlight

magic-bulb-LED-flashlight

the chinese company magic bulb unveiled a new LED light bulb that doubles as a portable flashlight. the bulb design
uses an insignificant 4 watts of power to create as much light as a 50W incandescent bulb. while the light can simple
screw into any socket in your home, it can also be removed and used as a flashlight. a built-in rechargeable battery
provides power to the light, giving it a life span of 3 hours on a full charge. while the battery may run out of juice
over time, the light bulb itself is estimated to last for 20,000 hours.

ronan + erwan bouroullec: 'ovale' for alessi

ronan-erwan-bouroullec...

french designers ronan and erwan bouroullec recently collaborated italian brand alessi on a new tableware collection
called 'ovale'.

all images courtesy of ronan and erwan bouroullec

this is how ronan and erwan bouroullec have described the project, with text shared by alberto alessi,
alessi's managing director:

'the ovale collection strives to be original, but it also wants to be rustic and traditional. we set out in pursuit
of delicate expression. this composition speaks about every day life, about breakfast, lunch, about everyone
getting together for dinner. there is a desire for simplicity.' then, ronan coined a new expression to describe alessi,
a likeness that appeals to me: 'alessi is very similar to the operation described in tim burton's movie adaptation
of willy wonka and the chocolate factory, a wonderful factory where alessi produces cakes and sweets.' says ronan.
delicate, slightly expressive, simple, almost neo-primitive, deliberately saying 'hold the sugar!', the complete
table service, 'ovale', marks the entry into the alessi catalogue of the two brothers from brittany. I am very grateful
to them not only for this beautiful project - with its subsidiary expressiveness, I'm sure it will find its way among
the major main course of our catalog - but also for having coined, defining a 'producer of sweet things', a phrase worthy
of philippe starck's definition in the 80s, 'alessi is a merchant of happiness.' - alberto alessi

'keep' is a dining table crafted from leftover materials of the furniture industry. wood blocks are arranged
and held together by metal bands to form the tables. the otherwise to be discarded wood gives the tables

talent award competition for design students, and is the senior project of designers petter thörne and anders johnsson
from konstfack school of design in stockholm. 'keep' comes in various types of wood and measures:

aviya serfaty: prosthetic leg for women

aviya-serfaty-prosthet...

'outfeet' by aviya serfaty

'outfeet' by recent industrial design graduate aviya serfaty is a new prosthetic leg designed
especially for amputee women. recognizing that most prosthesis available on the market today
are bad imitations of a natural leg, or are simply thin steel poles that disregard the female
body silhouette altogether, 'outfeet' aims to embrace the idea of a prosthesis not only as a medial
device but also as a fashion accessory.

the product's first focus is to meet the wide variety of needs in day to day life: the design features
adjustable knobs that create artificial arches in the sole to adapt to whatever occasion,
from simple commuting to sports. a separate high heel component can also be added for
an evening look. there is also a collection of flexible skins that can be stretched over
the carbon fiber body to give the leg a different look and silhouette without overbearing
the prosthesis with additional weight.

byungsoo choi at gwangju art biennale 2010

on june 9, 1987 yonsei university student han-yeol lee (1966-1987) was struck in the head by a police tear gas
canister while attending a pro-democracy rally in seoul, and later died from his injuries. lee's deth quickly became
a rallying point for members of the democracy movement, and his funeral drew crowds estimated in the millions.
one of the major focal points of lee's funeral was a large memorial portrait of the fallen activist painted by the
artit and fellow democracy-fighter byungsoon choi. a truck displaying the portrait followed the mourners on their
route from seoul to gwangju, where the young man was born. after the funeral, choi's painting was publically
displayed at yonsei university aas a memorial, but it was quickly attacked and destroyed by seoul police forces,
which sought to downplay lee's death. choi painted an identical portrait to replace the one that had been
destroyed, but soon after it was replaced, this second portrait was slashed with knives, and act of vandalism
that many also attributed to the police. the slashed painting was eventually repaired, and is on view in the
biennale, affixed to a truck in the same manner as during lee's funeral. over the course of its two iterations,
choi's image has acted as bothe a social crystallization point and as an icon, as a focal point for throngs of
mourners and as a cipher for the democratization movement as a whole. it thus bacame a target of aggression
by those who fear the power of images.

abie abdillah: rattan chairs

'doeloe lounge chair' by abie abdillah, 2010
rattan frames with upholstered seating and backrest
1100 x 1000 x 800 mm

'doeloe lounge chair' and 'pretzel bench' by indonesian furniture designer abie abdillah
utilizes a unique, sustainable material called rattan. native to south east asia--especially
indonesia which provides roughly 70% of the world's rattan supply--is a palm that can
grow past 100 meters in length with almost 600 different species under its name.
although aesthetically similar to bamboo, rattan is solid and bendy.

(left) front view
(right) back view

inspired by the design of 'oplet', a small car used in jakarta for
public transportation
from the 30s to the late 70s, 'doeloe lounge
chair' uses curved rattan poles as
a frame and backrest for the
upholstered seating unit. from the front, the ends
of the arm rests
resemble the circular headlights of the traditional vehicle.

bent rattan poles
970 x 650 x 470 mm

'pretzel bench' is a modular seating piece that utilizes long, bent
poles of rattan for
the main framing of the chair. though strong and
solid, the material has a stretchy
characteristic which requires it to
be braced in various places. the shape of a pretzel
was borrowed for a
self-structural form.
