violets, part 2

violets-part-2

More violets. Because i like them. These are some things I made for my etsy shop this week: some little shoes, and a brass locket with some embroidered flowers inside.I'm feeling distracted today- I don't know why. Might have something to do with drinking too much coffee, or perhaps listening to the news updates about Christchurch. Hope you're all okay, down there.I'm loving this blog by Sarah Laing at the moment- Let Me Be Frank. She is a Frank Sargeson fellow writer-in-residence and mother of three- and her posts speak to me.I'm still obsessively listening to this album by Sufjan Stevens. It's very good.Hope you're having a nice Wednesday!

The weekend that was...

The-weekend-that-was

How was your weekend? Ours was a bit drizzly, but a little bit of drizzle is always good incentive to take it easy!Popped into our local Ikea (total zoo! Out, but still in.

Out-but-still-in

For the past two years, I’ve been very lucky to win the prize for Best Design Blog in the SA Blog Awards. But this year, the stakes are a lot higher, as there really is a fabbo selection of hot design-centred SA blogs these days. Sadly li’l old Skinny laMinx didn’t make the cut, but the other blog I write – for ELLE Decoration – is a serious contender.
So if your clicking finger is feeling itchy, please give it (and my ego) a scratch by clicking below and voting for the DECO blog.

Great Migration

Great-Migration

Last week I was so excited to see that the fabric I’d sent off to Spruce in Austin Texas had been used on some spectacular Befores & Afters, featured on Design*Sponge too. Check out the enormous sofa covered in my Duikers print.

And now I see the loveseat that  Spruce covered in my Cloudbirds print is now up for sale on Etsy (thanks Wendren & Susan for letting me know!).  So exciting!

tart tarts

tart-tarts

I was lucky enough to score a bag of limes from my parents' orchard, and so I made some citrusy tarts to take to a party last weekend. Tom's Mum often makes these, and so I pretty much stole her idea, but they were nowhere near as good. You could say, in fact, that my tarts were extremely 'rustic'. But the filling was really nice, and we've been eating it on toast this week. I made my usual lemon curd recipe, but substituted the 5 lemons with 4 limes, and 2 lemons instead. The result is a little more tart-tasting, and lighter-coloured mixture. I really enjoyed this recent post on angry chicken about favourite homemade foods (and her lemon curd in particular) bringing the most joy. And I so agree- I could happily eat lemon curd every morning for the rest of my life.

book: little birds

book-little-birds

Little Birds: 26 Handmade Projects to Sew, Stitch, Quilt & Love (Design Collective) Published by Stash books, C&T Publishing (June 16, 2010).
awwww, having seen this book around the blogs I was intrigued – especially as I hadn’t heard of this publisher before either – turns out Stash is an offshoot of traditional quilt publishers C&T Publishing – who have seen a need in the craft blog world and filled it with fun and folksy and simpler projects suitable for beginners/intermediate crafters who are younger than their usual readers. So about this book – its a collective of designers who have each contributed a bird project – great simple and sweet idea – I thought it might be too much – all those birds – not much variety – but turns out I was wrong – with as many bird designs as materials and techniques – there is lots in this book to love.

How about a peacock or a stork made from recycled sweaters, with hand stitched vintage fabric elements (design by Amy Adams), or a very dapper looking owl (image above) made from tweed and tapestry fabric (design by Eleanor Bruce), I particularly loved Mildred the dove (image above), with her little felt bag full of baguettes, she is made from felt and her adorable face is embroidered (design by Samantha Cotterill). As well as little softies like these three mentioned, there are also a selection of embroidery designs, quilts, pillows and even a clutch purse. All the templates are included in the back of the book (they do require enlarging on a photocopier), so there is much here to enable you to mix and match your designs and create your own little bird.
